Drama League puts spotlight on noms

Org also bestowing Julia Hansen Award for excellence in directing

The Drama League, a Gotham-based association dedicated to fostering the American theater, has announced the nominees for its annual awards. Org gives nods in three competitive categories: play, musical and revival.

Nominees for production of a play are “Copenhagen,” “Dinner With Friends,” “Dirty Blonde,” “Jar the Floor,” “Last Train to Nibroc,” “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” and “Waste.”

Musical nominees are “Aida,” “Contact,” “James Joyce’s The Dead,” “Kat and the Kings,” “Swing” and both the Manhattan Theater Club Off Broadway and the Broadway musicals called “The Wild Party.”

Revival contenders, in which both plays and musicals compete, are “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” “Amadeus,” “American Buffalo,” “Kiss Me Kate,” “The Real Thing,” “True West” and “Uncle Vanya.”

The org will also bestow four other awards at a gala luncheon May 5 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel: for “distinguished achievement in musical theater,” “unique contribution” to theater, “distinguished performance” and a new honor, the Julia Hansen Award for excellence in directing. Hansen is the prexy of the org and the founder of its Director’s Project, which helps provide apprenticeships for theater helmers. Latter award will be presented by Lincoln Center Theater a.d. Andre Bishop.
