The Broadway production of “James Joyce’s The Dead” will replace “Finian’s Rainbow” as the final presentation of the Ahmanson Theatre’s 1999-2000 season.
In an exclusive booking — no tour is yet set — the musical play will open July 19 and run through Sept. 3 with previews beginning July 11. It closed April 16 on Broadway after 112 performances.
Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award for best new musical when it ran Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, the musical is based Joyce’s short story, the last work in his book “Dubliners.”
“Finian’s Rainbow” was canceled due to producer Rodger Hess’ “difficulty in completing capitalization,” Ahmanson artistic director Gordon Davidson said in a statement.
“The Dead” is directed by Richard Nelson, who wrote the book and conceived and adapted the lyrics with the musical’s composer Shaun Davey. Choreography is by Sean Curran.
