Newcomers boost B.O. in 3rd week's rise

Legit B.O. rose for the third week in a row, totaling $14,000,013, up $595,483 over the previous week.

However, four new shows in previews — “Copenhagen,” “Jesus Christ, Superstar,” “Taller Than a Dwarf” and “The Ride Down Mt. Morgan” — brought $968,303 into the pipeline, meaning that most of the other 28 shows on Broadway declined.

Of all shows, “Riverdance” scored the biggest gain, up $161,267 for a final $893,472 against a gross potential of $983,840 — much of its oomph the result of an added eighth performance over previous session. The dance show played 95.11% capacity.

“True West” experienced a good bump, rising $33,728 to land at $276,791, with its g.p. not far ahead at $300,202. The Sam Shepard drama performed at 99.39% cap, its average ticket set at $55.17.

‘Moon’ waxes

“A Moon for the Misbegotten” jumped $76,547 for a final $301,856 against its gross potential of $444,168. The Eugene O’Neill played 81.84% cap, its average ticket going for $49.26.

In addition to “Riverdance,” “True West” and “Moon,” minor upticks were registered by “Amadeus” (up $3,415), “Cats” ($15,640), “Fosse” ($7,618), “Kiss Me, Kate” ($8,603), “The Lion King” ($1,704) and “The Phantom of the Opera” ($8,753).

As always, “The Lion King” managed to sell out. Just south of 100% capacity were “Beauty and the Beast” (98.92% cap), “The Phantom of the Opera” (99.69%), “Rent” (97.28%) and “Aida” (97%). With three heavily comped previews and five regular performances, Elton John’s tuner took a minor dip, down $8,264 for a final $618,158 against its $718,543 gross potential.

A total of 18 shows shifted into reverse, the extremes being “Annie Get Your Gun” (down $79,445) and the previewing “Contact” (down only $5,754).

“Squonk” called it quits on March 26, after 24 previews and 32 perfs. It’s final week produced $49,447.
