An intriguing, somewhat cerebral first feature by Albertina Carri, “I Won’t Go Back Home” contrasts the way a murder affects two families, one upper bourgeois and the other hovering between unemployment and small-time crime. Script’s wide-angle view of Argentine society carefully draws the characters without judging them. Grainy black-and-white photography underlines pic’s rigorous aesthetic intentions and earmarks it for serious arthouse auds and festivals.

Two middle class brothers quarrel bitterly over whether to sell the family company. The hard-working one is gradually set up as the murder victim. Meanwhile, an aimless young man living on and off in his angry father’s house begins an affair with a prostitute. One of her clients is the second brother, and through her he begins his slow march to murder. Story is presented as pieces of a puzzle, made more difficult for viewers to follow by Paula Grandio’s heavily textured and atmospheric cinematography. Also confusing is an opening flashback of the killing. Pic’s distanced style is echoed in the low-key acting Carri coaxes from the cast.
