LONDON — Working Title Films has pacted with producer David Kelly to make “Tower,” a $10 million feature based on the true story of Welsh coal miners who took on the British government and won.
Kelly (“High Boot Benny,” “Mad About Mambo”) will produce. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will exec produce. Working Title has made such pics as “Notting Hill” and “Elizabeth.”
“Tower” will be helmed by Marc Evans (“Resurrection Man”) from a script by Colin Welland (“Chariots of Fire”). Pic marks the first of two features Evans is committed to direct for Working Title. Lensing is skedded for the spring; casting begins this fall.
Kelly optioned the rights to “Tower” in 1994, at the time of the coal miners’ dispute.
Faced with closure of the last deep mine in Wales, 239 miners organized an international campaign to fend off the Tory government and buy out the mine’s owners.
