Winstar picks up 18 Fassbinder titles

Company to tour collection in 2002

NEW YORK — After a buying spree at the New York Film Festival, Winstar Communications has bulked up its TV and video library by acquiring North American rights to 18 films by German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Partnering with the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation in Berlin, Winstar will receive many of the cult director’s best known features, from “The Marriage of Maria Braun” to “The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant” and “Fox and His Friends.” Also in the package are two short films by the helmer and two documentaries about him.

To mark the 20th anniversary of Fassbinder’s death in 2002, Winstar will tour the collection theatrically. It will also release a selection of newly mastered DVDs and make all the titles available on VHS.

“With this acquisition, Winstar is the distributor of the largest number of Fassbinder films available from one source,” said Winstar TV & Video senior veep of acquisitions and co-productions Krysanne Katsoolis.
