John Hamburg has inked a seven-figure deal to write and direct an untitled comedy for Universal Pictures.
If Hamburg’s directing gig comes through, it could bring the final sum to $2 million.
No producers are yet attached to the project. U’s Allison Brecker, exec veep of production, and Kevin Misher, prexy of production, will oversee the pic for the studio.
Hamburg recently served as one of the writers on the Robert De Niro/Ben Stiller starrer “Meet the Parents” for U and director Jay Roach. He also wrote and directed the 1998 Sundance pic “Safe Men,” starring Sam Rockwell and Steve Zahn, released by October Films in 1998.
“We were so thrilled with the terrific job John did on ‘Meet the Parents’ that we knew that we had to snatch him up before someone else did,” Misher said. “He is a fresh new creative in the industry.”
