Anthony Minghella has been named ShoWest 2000 director of the year, picking up some buzz heading into Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
A Globe nominee for best helmer, the writer-director of “The Talented Mr. Ripley” has also racked up a best director win from the National Board of Review. “Ripley” has been named a best picture contender by both the Globes and the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. The pic is Minghella’s follow-up to his 1996 effort “The English Patient,” which nabbed nine Academy Awards, including best picture and director.
Breaking into the biz as a playwright, Minghella’s pic credits also include “Truly Madly Deeply” (1991) and “Mr. Wonderful” (1993).
The National Assn. of Theatre Owners, organizers of the annual ShoWest confab, will present Minghella with his honor March 9 in Las Vegas.
