NEW YORK — John Sayles has been hired by Universal to adapt “A Cold Case,” a New Yorker crime story that is being developed as a possible starring vehicle for Tom Hanks.

The article, about the 30-year quest of a Manhattan district attorney’s chief investigator to solve the murder of a restaurateur, was optioned in February by U-based Playtone Co., the partnership between Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. The duo will produce the film.

Sayles will begin writing the film immediately, though he will not direct it. While Sayles recently completed an original script that will likely be his next directing vehicle, his next feature plans haven’t yet been firmed.

“A Cold Case” is just one of several high-profile projects in the works for Playtone, which recently teamed with Castle Rock for a seven-figure deal on “The Polar Express,” an adaptation of the Chris Van Allsburg children’s book, in which Hanks will star.

Sayles is repped by Paradigm.
