Michelle Rodriguez, who debuted as the lead in “Girlfight,” has joined the cast of Universal’s race-car drama “Red Line.”
Rodriguez will portray the only female member of a gang of street racers. The character is also Vin Diesel’s love interest. Director Rob Cohen said he “flipped out” over Rodriguez’ performance as a teenager who boxes in “Girlfight,” which shared the Grand Jury prize for best drama at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
“We needed someone who could play a Joan Jett-type character who is really wild,” said Cohen, who will begin lensing in late July in Los Angeles.
The project, previously titled “Racer X,” will also star Paul Walker, Jordanna Brewster and Rick Yune. Neal Moritz is exec producing and Doug Clayburn (“The Serpent and the Rainbow,” “Money Train”) will produce from a script by Gary Scott Thompson.
Rodriguez is repped by the William Morris Agency.
