Pliny Porter, Julia Roberts’ producing partner for five years, has been granted a first-look deal with Joe Roth’s Revolution Studios.
Porter will segue from his current position as head of Roberts’ Gotham-based Shoelace Prods. to become an indie producer able to bring projects to Roth that either include Roberts’ attachment or come without it.
Roberts’ plans to replace Porter were unclear at press time. The actress recently signed a nonexclusive deal with Roth to make three pics for him over the next five years.
“I am very excited to be in business with Joe, who is one of the best people to be in business with,” said Porter, who added that he is anxious to become an active producer.
At Shoelace, Porter had been developing five projects, two of which may star Roberts. He will continue shaping those projects.
Also while at Shoelace, Porter worked with producer Wendy Finerman (“Forrest Gump”) as an exec producer on “Step Mom,” which starred Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris. He is currently developing “The Women” at New Line without Roberts’ attachment.
Porter also has “Sabina” set up at Fox, a project he is shaping with playwright Christopher Hampton; story centers on a love triangle between Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud and the title character.
In addition, Porter is co-writing “Nikola Tesla” along with an A-list writer. Project is a parallel time-line thriller based on real events.
Porter’s deal with Revolution is being negotiated by John Sloss of Gotham-based Sloss Law Offices.
