The Mouse House has tapped “The Mouse Hunt” scribe Adam Rifkin to write and direct “Posse,” a sci-fi action comedy.
Deal is worth a high six-figure sum, with Rifkin to complete the screenplay before the pic is greenlit at Disney for Rifkin to direct.
Project will be produced by special f/x wizard Stan Winston. Co-producer is Brian Gilbert, veep of production at Stan Winston Prods. Buena Vista Motion Picture Group co-presidents Todd Garner and Nina Jacobson are overseeing the project for Disney.
Story centers on a small-town sheriff who is dragged into a manhunt by three alien federal marshals.
Rifkin has directed such pics as “Detroit Rock City,” “Welcome to Hollywood,” “The Chase” and “The Dark Backward.” His writing credits include “Mouse Hunt,” “The Chase” and “The Dark Backward.” He also co-wrote “Small Soldiers.”
Winston did the f/x for “Mouse Hunt” and “Small Soldiers” and Rifkin and Winston have wanted to work together since.
Deal was negotiated by William Morris Agency’s Alan Gasmer and Michael Shenkman at Bloom, Hergott, Cook & Deimer; Winston’s end of the pact was negotiated by David Gersh of the Gersh Agency.
Rifkin is repped by the WMA and manager Peter Safran at Basic Entertainment.
