MADRID — Spain’s top indie distributor-exhibitor, Antonio Llorens’ Lauren Films, is in advanced talks with two other local cinema circuits to create the biggest exhibition loop ever in the country.
The alliance between Lauren Cinemas (the exhib subsid of Lauren Films that controls 84 screens), Abacocine (75 screens) and Cine Box (73 screens) would not only coordinate programming but also acquisitions.
Outpowering local loops Union Cine Ciudad (UCC, 228 screens in Spain) and ACEC (214), joint venture Yelmo-Cineplex (220 screens) and the Paramount-Universal combo, UCI-Cinesa (169 screens), the joint exhibition venture could well be up-and-running by April. Execs at all three exhibitors declined to comment.
The new loop will strengthen immeasurably Lauren’s power in accessing key playdates for its middling to smaller titles, and its bargaining power as an exhibitor with the U.S. majors.
