Jersey Films has picked up the rights to Binnie Kirshenbaum’s “On Mermaid Avenue,” tapping Tim John (“Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde”) to adapt the screenplay, which will redubbed “Mermaids in Manhattan.”
Pic will be produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher.
Pamela Adby, Jersey’s senior veep, brought project into the company along with Eric Gold of Gold/Miller. Marcy Kaplan, Tim John and Gold will serve as exec producers.
Published in 1993 by Fromm Intl., “On Mermaid Avenue” is a quirky tale, set in Gotham, of female bonding and the search for men and happiness.
Kirshenbaum’s most recent book, “Pure Poetry,” was published by Simon & Schuster.
Kirshenbaum is repped by Jennifer Lyons of Gotham-based literary agency Writers House as well as Ron Bernstein of ICM.
Jersey Films declined to comment on the deal
