NEW YORK — The 22nd annual IFP Market kicked off Friday night at Chelsea’s Village East Cinemas with a special screening of Sony Pictures Classics’ “Just Looking,” the sophomore directing effort of Jason Alexander.
DuArt Film and Video and the Independent Film Channel hosted the screening, which was followed by the market’s opening night party at the Altman Building in Chelsea.
While Alexander could not attend the screening, three of the film’s young stars told Daily Variety what it had been like to work with the director, whom they described as virtually imperturbable on the set.
“He never frowned,” said Allie Spiro-Winn, with Amy Braverman and Joey Franquinha agreeing, “even when we had to do a take 50 times. Sometimes he would say, ‘If you don’t do that right, I’ll have to put you through the paddy-whack machine,’ but he would say it with a smile.”
Also in attendance were pic’s scripter Marshall Karp and thesp Rich Licata, Berlin Intl. Film Festival head Dieter Kosslick, indie producers Gill Holland and Doug Block, IFC’s Next Wave Films prexy Peter Broderick, Reelplay.com co-prexy Dennis Young and Independent Feature Project exec director Michelle Byrd.
