Samuel Goldwyn Films and Starz! Encore Entertainment have pacted to produce an English-language remake of Ang Lee’s romantic comedy “Eat Drink Man Woman,” which the Samuel Goldwyn Co. released in 1994. The new film, “Tortilla Soup,” stars Hector Elizondo (“Chicago Hope”) and Raquel Welch, with a setting that has been transplanted to the Latino community of Los Angeles.
Maria Ripoll (“Twice Upon a Yesterday”) helms the pic, which John Bard Manulis (“The Basketball Diaries”) is producing from an adaptation by “Woman on Top” screenwriter Vera Blasi.
Principal photography began July 12 on the pic, which Samuel Goldwyn plans to release in 2001 through IDP, a recently launched distribution cooperative with Stratosphere Entertainment and Fireworks Pictures. A cable premiere on Starz! will follow the theatrical run.
Elizondo portrays a Mexican-American master chef and father of three daughters who has lost his taste for food but not for life. Welch plays a grandmother who has her eye on the chef.
