NEW YORK — Castle Rock has made a preemptive seven-figure deal for an original pitch by Tony Gilroy, whose last script, “Proof of Life,” is in production for Castle Rock, with Taylor Hackford directing Meg Ryan, Russell Crowe, David Morse and David Caruso.
Gilroy’s pitch is described as a contemporary drama centering on a New York attorney.
Gilroy will write the script and serve as a producer for the first time. There is also buzz that he has expressed interest to the studio about possibly making his directorial debut on the film, though nothing will be decided until he writes it.
The project was brought in by Castle Rock Pictures president Martin Shafer and production prexy Liz Glotzer.
“Proof of Life” marks Gilroy’s third collaboration with Hackford. He scripted the adaptation of the Stephen King novel “Dolores Claiborne,” and is a credited writer on “Devil’s Advocate.”
Gilroy also wrote the Castle Rock comedy “Bait,” the Jamie Foxx starrer directed by Antoine Fuqua, which has wrapped and will be released by Warner Bros. this year. Gilroy also was one of the writers of “Armageddon” and wrote “Extreme Measures.”
He is repped by ICM’s Patty Detroit and lawyered by Jackie Fuchs.
