Barry Blaustein, helmer of the wrestling documentary “Beyond the Mat,” is in negotiations with Universal to direct “The Gelfin,” a script he and writing partner David Sheffield sold to Imagine Entertainment more than five years ago.
The project will be produced by Imagine co-topper Brian Grazer and executive produced by Sheffield.
The late Chris Farley had committed to the title role, that of a 6,000-year-old genie-like character who brings good luck when in a good mood and bad luck when not.
Blaustein drew strong reviews for “Mat,” which focused on the lives of World Wrestling Federation stars and has-beens. Lions Gate released the Imagine-produced film in March amid opposition from the WWF.
Blaustein and Sheffield have penned a number of comedy hits, including “Coming to America” and “The Nutty Professor.” They also wrote the “Nutty” sequel, rolling out next month from Universal.
The duo are repped by CAA.
