Former U CEO Silver goes ‘Hardcore’ for military

Castle Rock to co-finance prod'n of Hackworth memoir

Former Universal Pictures chairman and CEO Casey Silver has agreed to produce “Hopeless to Hardcore,” the as-yet-unpublished memoir of military affairs writer and retired Col. David Hackworth.

Castle Rock Entertainment has agreed to participate in financing the film with Silver’s Gone Fishin’ Prods., set up in October as a Universal-financed production company.

The script, to be written by Michael Schiffer, will explore the aftermath of Hackworth’s 1971 decision to oppose the Vietnam War while still serving as a Special Forces commander. Silver, Schiffer and Eilhys England are set to produce and Gail Stayden will executive produce.

England is co-authoring the book with Hackworth. The pair co-wrote the thriller “Price of Honor,” published by Doubleday.

Director Tony Scott has been approached to helm the project. Scott and Schiffer teamed as helmer and scripter on “Crimson Tide.”
