Disney’s animated “Fantasia 2000” broke records at Imax theaters worldwide in its opening bow over the New Year’s holiday weekend, enchanting a two-day gross of $2.2 million.
Pic bowed on 75 Imax screens around the world (including 54 in the U.S. and Canada) with an average of $41,481 per screen.
The figure represents the best gross ever for an Imax release and surpasses the highest weekly total for any previous Imax pic.
International grosses are expected to be released Tuesday, Disney said.
“We are enormously proud of ‘Fantasia 2000’ and gratified by the overwhelming response it is getting at Imax theaters all over the world,” said Richard Cook, chairman of the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group. “The film received spectacular receptions during its live concert performances in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles. It represents an important new milestone in our studio’s continuing legacy as an animation pioneer.”
“Fantasia 2000” is skedded to run exclusively at Imax theaters through April 30, having already completed a 10-day “World Premiere Tour” with live concert performances.
