The Festival do Rio BR 2000 will bestow cash prizes upon local productions for the first time.
The awards, totaling 299,030 real ($166,500), are aimed at supporting the winners’ marketing and distribution efforts — the leading problem for local pics, fest organizers have determined.
Auds at the Oct. 5-18 fest will cast their votes for best feature (a $111,000 prize) and for best longform docu, ($55,500).
The fest will release the list of competing features and docs on Sept. 6.
Fest was created last year through the merger of the long-running Rio Cine Festival and MostraRio. It will screen about 260 features this year, along with 140 shorts and videos.
