Hellinic fest to bow ‘Safe’

Greece's #1 B.O. pic gets U.S. preem at Thessaloniki USA Fest

Greece’s highest-grossing film ever, Thanasis Papathanasiou’s comedy “Safe Sex,” will make its U.S. bow at the fourth Thessaloniki USA Film Festival unspooling at Manhattan’s Anthology Film Archives on April 14-21.

As a Stateside satellite to the 40-year-old fest held yearly in the Hellenic city of Thessaloniki, event showcases new films from Greece and the Balkans. Among this year’s offerings are 13 U.S. and three Gotham preems.

N.Y. bows in the lineup include Miklos Jansco’s graveyard farce “The Lord’s Lantern in Budapest” and Constantine Giannaris’ gangland drama “From the Edge of the City.”

U.S. preems include docu “The Road of Fraternity and Unity,” by Slovenian tyro Maja Weiss.

Fest also will feature a retrospective honoring Hellenic helmer Nikos Nikolaidis, to conclude with the U.S. premiere of his latest neo-noir concoction “See You in Hell, My Darling.”
