Dardenne tops short-film jury

'Rosetta' director to head Cinefondation

PARIS — Belgian film director Luc Dardenne will take over as president of the Short Film Jury at this year’s Cannes Intl. Film Festival.

Dardenne, who, with his brother Jean-Pierre, directed last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Rosetta,” will also head up the Cinefondation Jury, established two years ago to recognize the best short and medium-length movies from film schools around the world.

The Short Film and Cinefondation Juries include directors Francesca Comencini (“Shakespeare in Palermo”), Claire Denis (“Good Work”) and Abderrahmane Sissako (“Life on Earth”) as well as actress Mira Sorvino.

Screenings for the Short Film and Cinefondation categories run May 18-20. The Cinefondation awards will be announced May 19. Kudos for short films in competition will be announced at the festival’s closing ceremony on May 21.
