In tandem with the launch of the redesigned Warner Bros. Web site today, Warner Bros. Online and Warner Bros. Animation announced a deal to bow Webisodes based on DC Comics characters.
In the new Warner Bros. Originals channel on the Web site, Netizens will find animated shorts based on intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo and the “Gotham Girls,” femme standouts from the Batman comics, including Batgirl, Cat Woman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.
The first Webisode, “Lobo is a Four Letter Word,” will go live today while “The Vault,” the first Gotham Girls installment, will bow in mid-July. Each short is expected to be three minutes long.
“By combining Warner Bros.’ expertise in animation with DC’s renowned characters, we’re able to provide fans with the best of both worlds, offering them a new dimension of interactive community,” said Kevin Tsujihara, exec veepee of new media at WB.
Besides the animated shorts, the Web site will offer chat rooms and arenas where fans can submit their own artwork for display.
“Comic book characters are born to jump off the page into other media and Internet animation is a perfect way to tell their stories,” said Paul Levitz, exec veepee and publisher at DC Comics.
Tsujihara said the long-term hope is to turn the DC Comics properties from Web franchises into TV shows.
“The Internet provides unique creative opportunities especially for those of us working in the animation world,” said Jean MacCurdy, prexy of Warner Bros. Animation.
