Those who want their MTV online will soon be able to get it a whole lot faster.
The MTVi Group announced Tuesday that it will team with broadband service provider Excite@Home to create Music.Excite.com, a site that will provide music content primarily to high-speed Internet users.
“This deal is a brand, content and creative collaboration and serves as the cornerstone of our music strategy. It’s a first in melding on-air programs with the broadband experience,” said George Bell, president and CEO of Excite@Home. “The convergence of the TV audience and broadband is a natural one, and we plan to give both early and experienced broadband users exposure to all the Web has to offer in music and entertainment through unique broadband applications.”
While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, execs said it does include a cross-marketing strategic relationship. MTVi will be the exclusive seller of advertising for the music.excite.com portal, expected to launch this summer. Site will be promoted on-air on MTV and VH1.
MTVi is a conglomeration of several online music sites, including MTV.com, VH1.com and SonicNet.com. Liberty Digital has a minority stake in the company.
“With the most recognized global entertainment brands, MTVi is well positioned to develop creative and compelling content for the broadband era, and we are very excited to be partnering with Excite@Home, the leader in broadband,” said Nicholas Butterworth, president and CEO of the MTVi Group. “As the lead programmer on Excite@Home’s music channels, this partnership will also allow us to offer integrated convergence programming to Excite@Home’s customer base.”
