Paramount-based Nickelodeon Movies, with producing partner Storypolis, has greenlit a computer-animated short based on a children’s book by “Bloom County” cartoonist Berkeley Breathed.
“Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big” will feature the voices of John Cleese, Haley Joel Osment and Harry Shearer. Jonathan Winters will appear in live-action form. Rather than finding its audience on the Internet, the seven-minute pic will be screened in traditional movie houses.
Nick Movies is in talks with major exhibs about running “Edwurd,” but hasn’t yet attached it to any specific feature-length pics.
Story centers on young Edwurd’s propensity for telling lies, one of which leads to near disaster. Narrator is his overlooked sister, Fannie Fudwupper.
Nick prexy of film and TV Albie Hecht called Edwurd “the kind of intriguing and endearing universal character that could only come from the mind of Berkeley Breathed.”
Fonda Snyder, co-founder of the Paul Allen-backed Storyopolis, will produce along with Alison Savitch and George Johnson. Book, due in September, kicks off a publishing venture between Storyopolis and Little, Brown.
Threshold Digital Research Labs is handling the animation with a new software program called Messiah.
