SYDNEY — United Intl. Pictures is losing Douglas Lee, its Sydney-based director of marketing for Southeast Asia and Australasia, and Soon-en Wong, its Singapore-based regional promotions and publicity manager.
The exits are unrelated. Lee, who expects to depart at the end of next month, told Daily Variety that he has decided to return to Asia and is seeking opportunities in Hong Kong and South Korea.
A seven-year UIP vet, Lee was based in Singapore until the distrib decided last year to shift its regional headquarters to Sydney, which meant relocation for Lee and Steve Ashmore, then VP of sales.
In April, as part of an overall cutback in overheads, UIP eliminated Ashmore’s post and handed responsibility for Southeast Asian sales to Roger Pollock, who was upped to VP from general manager for Singapore and Malaysia.
Sources said that restructuring made Lee’s position overseeing marketing from Sydney while Pollock spearheaded distribution efforts out of Singapore, logistically very difficult.
Lee said, “It’s time for me to move on. I am looking for opportunities in North Asia where I feel my cutting edge is.”
It’s understood that Soon-en Wong, who could not be reached for comment, is leaving to take another post.
UIP has not indicated who will replace Lee and Wong. It’s thought likely that UIP Australia will appoint a Sydney-based marketing manager — a position Lee had occupied in addition to his regional role.
