OpenTV taps vet Michaeli veepee

Exec to o'see strategic planning

Interactive TV services provider OpenTV has tapped vet PR exec John Michaeli for the newly created post of VP, worldwide public relations.

Michaeli, who will report to CEO Jan Steenkamp, will oversee strategic planning responsibilities for the company’s internal and external operations.

Supported by such investors as America Online, Echostar, News Corp. and Time Warner, OpenTV builds complete software and infrastructure platforms for digital interactive TV, delivering on-demand content to other digital communications devices.

Pax past

Michaeli joins OpenTV from Paxson Communications’ TV arm Pax TV, where he was responsible for the 1998 national publicity launch of the network, which is currently in the process of merging with NBC.

“John’s extensive experience in publicizing and strategic planning for television programming directed to a wide range of distinct audience segments — from kids to teens to adults — makes him a perfect addition to the OpenTV marketing team,” said Steenkamp.

Michaeli, who joined Pax from the Fox Family Channel, also held PR and corporate communications posts at Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, DIC Entertainment and Hanna-Barbera Prods.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to be part of the industry’s most dominant player to help raise OpenTV’s marketing visibility,” said Michaeli.
