French fail to seize control of Arte

Channel to stay outside of holding

PARIS — Jobst Plog, the German boss of Franco German channel Arte, was savoring victory Wednesday over French efforts to seize control of Arte.

Under a broadcasting bill currently before the French senate, the French component of the channel, which was created as an independent entity in 1991, was to have been brought under the umbrella of a new super holding with pubcasters France 2 and France 3.

But following months of noisy protest from Arte’s supporters, earlier this week Prime Minister Lionel Jospin announced that Arte would stay outside the holding.

But now that France has renounced its plans to bring Arte under the new France Television holding, there is speculation that it could turn its back on the channel.
