Michael Rooney, publisher of ESPN the Magazine, has been named the mag’s senior VP and general manager. He replaces John Skipper, who recently was promoted to general manager of ESPN Internet Group.
In his new position, Rooney will be responsible for all editorial, circulation, marketing and advertising aspects of the sports-themed, young-male targeted title, of which he’s been publisher since its inception in 1998.
‘Best of both worlds’
“Michael’s appointment gives us the best of both worlds–a direct link to a very successful past and an outstanding vision for the future,” said ESPN Inc. prexy George W. Bodenheimer. “He is a respected leader in the publishing industry, understands the ESPN brand, and perhaps most important has excelled in the editorial mission of the magazine.”
Among titles published by Rooney prior to his joining ESPN the Magazine are Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Discover and Men’s Health.
