Vidgame Heavy Gear to infiltrate television

SPFE to develop 40-episode animated series

With a loyal audience base that echoes of “Star Trek” and “Lord of the Rings,” popular video and role-playing game Heavy Gear will infiltrate the small screen next fall thanks to a deal that gives Sony Pictures Family Entertainment worldwide television and merchandising rights to the saga.

SPFE will now develop a 40-episode animated series of a future sci-fi battle as a daily strip for the BKN Kids Network. Series will follow the ongoing heroics of the soldiers fighting on an Earthlike world 4,000 years in the future.

In addition, Sony will create and offer a variety of merchandise including apparel, published items, food, back-to-school goods and collectibles as part of a retail strategy through Bandai America Inc., which was named master toy licensee for the property.

“An animated series is the next natural step in extending the already popular Heavy Gear franchise,” said Sander Swartz, president of SPFE. “The new series provides another exciting vehicle for the established fan base to experience the thrill of Heavy Gear, with intriguing storylines, interesting characters and state-of-the-art animation. We will build on that base to grow a strong and loyal audience for the television show.”

Introduced in 1994, the franchise was created by Pierre Ouelette, Dream Pod 9 and Target Games, which have released two videogames for the series, Heavy Gear and Heavy Gear II.
