TVN inks for ‘Cirque’ PPV

Will also carry 'Canyon Walk'

NEW YORK — TVN Entertainment has signed for the first time as lead distributor for two pay-per-view specials: “Cirque du Soleil: Quidam” (Aug. 1) and “Canyon Walk” (Sept. 5), in which French-born aerialist Philippe Petit will walk on a tightrope stretched across a portion of the Grant Canyon.

TVN will license the rights to No. 1 pay-per-view distributor Viewer’s Choice and to the direct-satellite distribs DirecTV and EchoStar. Viewer’s Choice has traditionally served as lead distrib on PPV events.

“Quidam” represents the first PPV performance of Cirque du Soleil, a Montreal-based circus troupe which incorporates dance, performance art and theater into its shows. Peter Waggwill exec producer the 90-minute special. David Mallet, who filmed “Cats” and “Michael Flatley: Lord of the Dance,” will direct. “Canyon Walk’s” Petit has walked on high wires between the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center and on a cable linking the Palais de Chaillot in Paris with the second story of the Eiffel Tower. Thomas Ring will exec produce for German company Highwire.
