‘Tenacious’ Black inks TV skein pact

Greenblatt Janollari to create series for thesp

HOLLYWOOD — Jack Black, star of HBO’s cult hit “Tenacious D,” has inked a series development deal with the Greenblatt Janollari Studio.

The pact calls for Greenblatt Janollari to create a primetime vehicle for Black, most likely for fall 2000. The deal was brokered by UTA.

Black is one-half of the acoustic rap duo Tenacious D, a Spinal Tap-esque creation whose underground popularity resulted in a limited-run HBO comedy skein. Last season, Black also starred in the unsold Greenblatt Janollari pilot “Heatvision and Jack,” a Ben Stiller-produced comedy that garnered critical praise despite the fact that it was never picked up.

“After working with Jack last year, we were thrilled to discover what a terrific actor and imaginative talent he is,” said Greenblatt Janollari co-head David Janollari. “We’re looking forward to breaking new ground and developing a show that captures his unique style.”

Said Black, “When Bob and David asked me if I wanted to come over and party with them, I said of course, under one condition — that we make television history.”

In addition to “Tenacious D,” Black appeared in the HBO sketch comedy skein “Mr. Show.” His feature credits include “Enemy of the State” and “The Jackal.” He will next be seen in the pics “Cradle Will Rock,” “Jesus’ Son” and “High Fidelity.”

    TV Review: 'Vanity Fair'

There’s something comforting about the predictability of a period piece novel adaptation in the Masterpiece Theater tradition. Knowing the story, or even just the rhythms of the genre, there are rarely many surprises. The women will toss off witticisms and cry careful, pretty tears; the men will steel their jaws and declare their love, ideally [...]
