Phoenix Pictures and Nick Nolte’s Kingsgate Films have teamed to develop an HBO anthology series about selected Congressional Medal of Honor winners.
Project is being developed as three hour-long segs, each focusing on a different recipient of the nation’s highest military honor. More than 3400 medals have been awarded for “uncommon valor” in combat since the first honor was bestowed during the Civil War in 1863.
John Milius (“Apocalypse Now,” “Clear and Present Danger”) has enlisted as exec producer the series. Milius also will write and direct the seg about Manila John Basilone, a Marine who fought at Guadalcanal during World War II.
Michael Blake (“Dances with Wolves”) will write and helm the seg about the youngest recipient to date, Julius Langbein, who was a drummer boy in the Civil War. Roger Avary, an Oscar-winner for “Pulp Fiction,” will spearhead the seg on James Stockdale, the 1992 vice presidential candidate who spent seven years as a prisoner of war during Vietnam.
Nolte and Kingsgate’s Greg Shapiro and Joel Lubin will serve as producers on the series, with Marc Lorber overseeing the project for Phoenix.
