DirecTV grows in Brazil

TV Bandeirantes, Canal 21 join direct-to-home service

MIAMI — DirecTV Brasil has added two local channels to its direct-to-home service: Brazil’s fourth-ranked broadcast network, TV Bandeirantes, and Canal 21, which is known for its news coverage.

Satcaster does not carry the top three broadcasters — TV Globo, SBT and TV Record — but is trying to increase its selection of broadcast webs.

“The addition of open channels has been a longtime request from our subscribers and a concern of DirecTV,” said Milton Torres, president of Galaxy Brasil, which runs DirecTV Brasil. “The acquisition … shows we are on the right path for future negotiations.”

The prospects for access to No. 1 network TV Globo are bleak. Globo, an investor in competing platform Sky Brasil, refuses to allow Galaxy’s DirecTV to carry the broadcast channel, which has a 50% share of all open-TV viewers in Brazil. Galaxy and Sky are locked in a similar battle in Mexico, where Televisa (another Sky investor) will not allow DirecTV to carry its four broadcast signals.

Bandeirantes said it will likely expand its relationship with DirecTV Brasil via other projects.
