The American Fashion Awards will make its TV premiere on E!
The Council of Fashion Designers of America, which presents the awards, cut a five-year deal with the cabler for the show, which will honor top designers such as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Yves Saint Laurent and celebrities including Cher and Sophia Loren.
The 18th annual event will take place June 2 at the 69th Regiment Armory in Gotham. E! will televise the edited awards show at 9 p.m. on June 13.
Showbiz invitedThe award’s audience of 1,000 will include a number of well- known Hollywood talent.
“Every single magazine has tables and brings celebrities,” said Fern Mallis, executive director of the CFDA. “The competition kicks in about who’s bringing the most star power.”
Fashion industry members have been pushing the CFDA to get a TV deal for its awards for years. However, the org’s board has been against televising the event for fear it would lose creative control, Fern said.
At ease with E!
The CFDA’s board felt comfortable with E! because the cable web runs a good deal of fashion-related programming and its execs would allow the organization to control the show’s production.
The awards show will be a production of Kaleidoscope Entertainment and the CFDA.
Edd Griles and Ray Volpe will serve as exec producers for the telecast.
The E! telecast will be prefaced by a 30-minute show also produced by Kaleidoscope and the CFDA.
