Alphabet edits down affils confab

Strained relations, monetary woes cut 1 day off meeting

In a move that reflects the tenuous state of network-affil relations — and possibly the budget crunch hitting all the webs — ABC has made a last-minute decision to pare back next month’s affil confab by a day.

The event, which had been skedded to run June 7-9 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, will now wrap up June 8 after just 1-1/2 days of meetings. ABC will sponsor a cocktail party on Monday night and a slate of meetings on Tuesday.

Alphabet insiders said the move was a result of the net’s decision to break off talks with the affil board of governors over several thorny issues. There won’t be the need for as many large meetings between ABC and stations at next month’s confab, the insiders say.

Some station sources, however, believe ABC may also be looking to save a few bucks. Quipped one affil insider: “Hopefully they’ll take the money they save and put it back in the affiliate compensation pool.”

Don’t bet on it.
