UPN’s first-ever broadcast of “The Source Hip Hop Music Awards” proved to be da bomb rather than a bomb, according to Nielsen overnight ratings data.
Kudofest kept it real with a 4.2 rating/8 share from 8-10 p.m. Friday, giving UPN its best-ever Friday metered market ratings and its highest rating on any night since May 26. UPN also beat Fox (3.6/7) for the first time ever on Friday.
The numbers were strong in several big markets, including Gotham, where the two-hour show earned an 8.0/13 and boosted UPN to a primetime win. UPN also won the night in Miami, placed second in Chicago and came in third in Los Angeles.
Rapper DMX and singer Lauryn Hill were the big winners at Wednesday night’s kudofest. DMX won best solo artist and live performer at the ceremony held at the Pantages Theater, while Outkast won best group and R. Kelly best R&B artist. Hill was lauded for best new solo artist and won best album for her “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Def Jam records co-founder Russell Simmons was given a lifetime achievement award.
