Gary Salt, president and literary partner at Paul Kohner Inc., died Monday of cancer at his home in Los Angeles. He was 53.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Salt began his career as a talent agent after completing his Ph.D. in dramatic literature at Stanford U. He joined Paul Kohner in 1976 and, following Kohner’s death in 1988, took over management and ownership of the agency along with Pearl Wexler.

His roster of clients through the years included Debra Winger, Ben Stein, Yul Brynner, Tony Huston, Klaus Kinski, Edward Anhalt and Lee Strasberg. His current client list also includes nearly three dozen publishing houses.

He is survived by his wife Lynn, his parents and a sister.

A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Directors Guild of America, 7920 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions in Salt’s name be made to National Hospice Foundation, 1901 Moore St., #901, Arlington, VA 22209.
