Pacifica shores up star pix

Intl. Media Fund powers distrib's expanding slate

CANNES — L.A.-based distribution company Pacifica Entertainment is accelerating its development activity, setting up projects with entities such as Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith’s Green Moon Prods., Bette Midler’s All Girl Prods. and Wesley Snipes’ Amen Ra Films.

Until now, Pacifica, formed by Moritz Borman and Chris Sievernich two years ago, has principally been focused on fully financing packaged pics. These include Quadra Entertainment’s “The Crow: Salvation,” Intermedia Films’ “Where the Money Is” and “Clay Pigeons,” and Summit Entertainment’s “Nurse Betty.”

Now, powered by financing from German investment group Intl. Media Fund, Pacifica is focusing on expanding its own pic slate.

According to Borman, the company has 12 pics in development, including:

  • “The Venetian’s Wife.” Green Moon’s Banderas and Griffith will produce magical love story written by Jill Wheeler.

  • “Widow’s Walk.” All Girl’s Midler and Bonnie Bruckheimer will produce Karl Gadjusek’s dramatic script.

  • “Chasing the Dragon.” Hong Kong police actioner has Snipes attached to produce and star.

  • “True Blue.” Cop drama is to be written and produced by Bo Zenga.

Pacifica also has several previously announced projects in development, including contempo romance “Cuba and the Night,” with Peter Barsocchini scripting and Wallis Nicita producing; and black comedy “Careful What You Wish For,” which Michael Hoffman will direct and Nicita will produce.

“We want to develop enough pictures ourselves to fill half our slate,” said Borman.

While Pacifica has a first-look deal with CLT/Ufa Intl. as a foreign sales company, it works with a number of sales agents.
