CANNES — Nicole Kidman is set to play the lead in Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar’s first English-lingo pic, the supernatural suspense drama “The Others.”
Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner’s Paramount-based C/W Prods. is in talks to exec produce the pic, skedded for a February shoot in Spain.
Miramax has acquired all English-speaking territories for “The Others.” Sogetel is negotiating to bring Studio Canal Plus into the project as a co-production partner. Canal Plus may also take on sales rights for the rest of the world.
In the pic, Kidman will play a mother of two children who becomes isolated and caught up in what becomes a Gothic thriller.
Amenabar’s relationship with C/W was established when Artisan Entertainment acquired U.S. rights to the helmer’s 1997 sci-fi thriller “Open Your Eyes” and C/W bought English-lingo remake rights.
“Others” is budgeted at $15 million-$20 million and backed by Sogecable subsid Sogetel. Producers on the pic are Sogetel CEO Fernando Bovaira, Jose Luis Guerda and Sunmin Park.
