Canal Plus bows indie arm

Group will have offices in Paris, London

CANNES — Paris-based Le Studio Canal Plus is to set up a new acquisition and sales arm, designed to rep indie films costing under $10 million.

The new division, which is yet to be named, will have offices in Paris and London. The Paris outfit will be run by Vincent Maraval, with London headed up by Alain de la Mata.

According to Maraval, the new entity will handle a maximum 10 pics a year, which will be marketed and sold by the unnamed structure rather than by Studio Canal Plus’ main sales arm, headed by Daniel Marquet.

The decision to break out the smaller arthouse pics from Studio Canal Plus’ main sales slate reflects an acceptance that smaller indie pics need specialist sales treatment.

“As the Canal Plus group sets itself up as a studio, we want to keep access to the roots of the independent business. Just like the American studios have specialist divisions, which concentrate on arthouse pictures, that’s what we’re doing,” commented Maraval.
