USIS fetes black cinema

Bogle guest of honor

JOHANNESBURG — The United States Information Service is celebrating the contributions that African-Americans have made to cinema by hosting an African-American Film Festival here. Guest of honor at the fest, which began Thursday and runs through next Thursday, is film historian and author Donald Bogle.

USIS will screen nine 35mm feature films during the festival spanning 80 years of American cinema, featuring directors such as Oscar Michaux and Carl Franklin, and thesps such as Sydney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge.

The films include “Within Our Gates” (1919), “Hallelujah” (1929), “Imitation of Life” (1934), “Intruder in the Dust” (1949), “Pinky” (1949), “Carmen Jones” (1954), “In The Heat of the Night” (1967), “Devil in a Blue Dress” (1995) and “Life” (1999).
