Two team for hoops docu

Oscar-winning Gast to helm

Spyglass Entertainment and New Urban Entertainment have teamed to produce a feature documentary on the game of basketball to be directed by Leon Gast, who won an Oscar for “When We Were Kings.”

The basketball project will chronicle the history of the game over the last 50 years and the social impact the game has had on the world and vice versa. The pic will combine archival and new footage with a soundtrack spanning five decades of musical influence.

Spyglass co-founders Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum will produce along with New Urban’s Kip Konwiser. Brian Gersh, a former William Morris motion pictures talent chief, will also produce through his new production and management entity Blue Train Entertainment.

David Falk (“Space Jam”) and Dennis Brownlee of New Urban will exec produce.

Barber and Birnbaum said in a statement, “This project provides a great platform to explore the connection between basketball’s extraordinary figures and American culture through the eyes of acclaimed director Leon Gast.”

Gast is managed by Gersh.
