NL offers ‘Sweet’ pic deal to Keller

Spec fetches $1 mil plus, DeVito to star in, helm

New Line Cinema has shelled out $1 million-plus for Jason Keller’s spec “Sugar’s Sweet Science of Bruising” for Danny DeVito to direct, produce and top-line.

DeVito will play an older boxing trainer and fight fixer who befriends a young boxer and takes him on the road, pursued by Vegas mobsters.

The deal for Keller provides him the seven figures as well as a blind script deal behind that. Story for the script came from Keller and Brent Roam.

New Line exec VP Lynn Harris is overseeing the pic, which New Line wants to put on a fast track.

Jersey Films’ DeVito, Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg are producing the pic. Sher and Jersey exec Gail Lyon brought the script into the company.

Keller’s credits include a script he wrote called “The Whole Magilla” with his partner Steven Christopher Young. Project was with Icon and is now in turn-around.

The pair is also writing for Denis Leary and Apostle Films and a third piece for director Mark Romanek.

CAA repped Keller along with attorney Carlos Goodman.
