Kaplan to helm ‘Calle’ for Royal

Pic to be filmed in both English and Spanish versions

MIAMI — Betty Kaplan has signed to direct “Calle Ocho,” the first pic from a slate of four being developed by fledgling Miami-based indie Royal Pictures.

Budgeted at $5 million, romantic drama tells of Cuban brothers who found a hit band and a nightclub in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana.

Kaplan, a bilingual Venezuelan-American, will direct two versions of the film, one in English and one in Spanish, as Royal hopes “Ocho” will go over big in the U.S. as well as the Hispanic and Latin American markets.

Pic has a tentative June start and supporting cast in place, but the two leads have not been cast, Royal topper Robert Brent told Daily Variety.
