‘Idle’ works to win top prize at Cottbuss Fest

'Bee' gets good buzz; 'Junction' connects

COTTBUS, Germany — “Idle Running,” a Slovenian film from director Janez Burger about a lazy longtime student coming to grips with adulthood, was awarded first prize at the ninth annual Cottbus Film Festival.

The film was among 12 pics in competition, which focuses exclusively on movies from Central and Eastern Europe. Second prize went to Tadjik filmmaker Jamshed Usmonov and South Korean director Boung Hun Min for their film “The Flight of the Bee,” which chronicles the attempts of a poor teacher to make life difficult for his wealthy neighbor.

“The Junction,” Polish helmer Urszula Urbaniak’s film about a small-town woman’s longing for love, was awarded third prize.

Some 450 invited guests and nearly 11,000 viewers attended the festival Nov. 3-7. Roland Rush, fest artistic director, said this year’s turnout was the biggest to date.
