Bender, who is also partnered with director Quentin Tarantino in Miramax-based A Band Apart, will produce the film with HyperFilms’ Melinda Farrell, Steven Roffer and Lynwood Spinks acting as executive producers.
The script is written by Simon Black and Marita Black. It’s the story of a bohemian playwright in Manhattan who pretends to be the mother of two children in order to gain the affections of a single father.
Pic will be Bender’s second collaboration with exec producers Farrell and Roffner. The three are also developing the drama “Black and Blue,” a film about an all-black Harlem police squad formed in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
Bender is in production in Malaysia on Andy Tennant’s remake of “The King and I,” entitled “Anna and the King,” starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Fat, for Fox 2000.
Spinks named Farrell and Roffer co-prexys at HyperFilms in 1998. The duo also have their own separate producing banner, Grand Central Pictures.
HyperFilms, which has a producing deal at Universal Pictures, is developing a number of pictures, including several projects with Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment.
Spinks is a former senior U exec and chief operating officer of Carolco Pictures. Farrell and Roffer previously held exec positions at Paramount and Warner Bros. respectively.
Bender’s producing credits include “Jackie Brown,” “A Price Above Rubies,” “Fresh,” “Good Will Hunting” and “Pulp Fiction.”
Endeavor and attorney Carlos Goodman repped the screenwriters. Attorney Stuart Rosenthal negotiated for HyperFilms.
