HOLLYWOOD — Web portal Yahoo! has launched a multimedia digital site, dubbed Yahoo! Digital, designed specifically for music and video devotees.
Emusic, a growing marketer and seller of downloadable music, will offer tunes on the site along with Beatnik and Liquid Audio.
The new property gives Yahoo! users the ability to watch and listen to Internet broadcasts of music as well as preview, download and purchase music.
Users will also be able to self-publish and sell their own music online.
“Yahoo! Digital provides our users with extremely powerful options in a forum where they can be both the entertainer as well as the entertained,” said Tim Brady, veep of production and executive producer, Yahoo!
Jewel, Seal, Kid Rock and more than a dozen other musicians and bands will offer concerts over the destination to help herald its launch.
The year-old Emusic boasts 90 indie labels and more than 22,000 tracks. It recently signed exclusive distribution deals with acts They Might Be Giants and Frank Black.
Gene Hoffman, Emusic.com prexy and CEO, said the site makes “downloading music easy, inexpensive and enjoyable — ultimately improving users’ online entertainment experience.”
Emusic last week inked a significant pact with America Online and gained access to its more than 50 million users across several sites. Yahoo! boasts more than 80 million monthly users.
The new site will also deliver video and interactive Net events, including live chats, streaming of live and on-demand Internet broadcasts and pay-per-view events.
Eight channels of video content are also being offered, including Western, horror, anime (Japanese cartoons) and fashion, with additional channels coming in the near future.
Users can also tap video selections from the Yahoo! Digital front page, or access an extensive library of on-demand videos through the video archive, including movies, sports, children’s programming and classic television shows.
Through the Liquid Audio portion of Yahoo! Digital, users have access to an extensive library of licensed music covering 16 genres.
