BERLIN — German telco Viag Intercom plans to join forces with Germany’s Kirch Group in a bid to acquire Berlin’s cable systems, Viag’s managing director Maximilian Ardelt said Monday at the Intl. Broadcast Fair in Berlin.
According to reports, Kirch has put in bids for the systems in Bavaria and in Berlin.
The Berlin systems are the largest of the nine regional ones currently on the block from telco Deutsche Telekom.
Viag has already formed a consortium together with several banks to bid for the Bavarian systems.
Although the official deadline for applications passed Aug. 20, additional applications would be considered if they are “interesting,” a DT spokesperson told Variety Monday.
That message bodes well for News Corp., which has sent a letter expressing interest in the systems, but has reportedly not yet submitted an application. Kirch was not available for comment.
